Chiropractic Care: Good for the Mind
September 29, 2011
You know that chiropractic care plays an important role in keeping your body in top condition. But did you know that it can be equally beneficial for your mind? In fact, because of chiropractic care’s broad effect on the nervous system, it can impact conditions ranging from ADD/ADHD to depression and anxiety.
Chiropractic care has a long history of being beneficial to the support of mental health, beginning with Dr. DD Palmer’s interest in the subject at the turn of the 20th century and continuing with the founding of the Forest Park Sanitarium in Davenport, Iowa. Today chiropractors throughout the country are seeing patients improve their mental state through treatment of subluxation and without the use of drugs.
According to the National Institute for Mental Health, in a given year 1 in 4 Americans will be considered diagnosable for one or more mental disorders. Considering that statistic, we can all benefit from the supportive care offered at our chiropractor’s office.

Fall Recipe: Baja Butternut Squash Soup
September 22, 2011
Soup’s on! Although butternut squash is available year-round, peak season begins early fall (right now!). Here’s a tasty recipe perfect for a weekend picnic or a chilly evening from the American Council on Exercise:
Recipe Overview
Serves: 10
Prep Time: 45 min.
Total Time: 80 min.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds (1 butternut or other winter squash)
- 1 teaspoon canola oil
- 2 stalks celery, chopped
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 carrot, chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4-1 teaspoon ground chipotle chile, (see Note)
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 6 cups vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoon snipped fresh chives, or chopped parsley
Cooking Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Cut squash in half and seed. Place the halves on a baking sheet, cut-side down. Bake until tender when pierced with a knife, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Scoop out flesh when cool enough to handle.
- Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add celery, onion and carrot and stir to coat. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring frequently, until soft, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in the squash flesh, cumin, chipotle to taste and cloves. Add broth and simmer, covered, until the vegetables are very tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
- Puree the soup with an immersion blender or a regular blender (in batches) until smooth. (Use caution when pureeing hot liquids.) Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with a drizzle of yogurt and sprinkle of chives (or parsley).
Note: Chipotle peppers are dried, smoked jalapeño peppers. Ground chipotle can be found in the specialty-spice section of most supermarkets or online at penzeys.com.

Does Your Teen Athlete Receive Chiropractic Care?
September 15, 2011
We’ve written about how important chiropractic care is for athletes; did you know that includes teens? At Rozenhart Family Chiropractic we take care of a few teen athletes including a swimmer for Yale, a high-level hockey player, a cheerleader and more.
There are a few reasons chiropractic care is especially important for teen athletes:
- It helps teens develop correctly and grow correctly. Spinal stress, or subluxation, can be particularly challenging for very active teens. In order to ensure proper development, chiropractic care is essential as part of a teenage athlete’s regimen.
- It allows for quicker healing from injuries. When there is an injury, the body always heals better with a proper nerve supply between brain and body. Subluxation disrupts proper nerve flow and doesn’t allow the body to heal as easily as it does when subluxation is removed by a chiropractor.
- It prevents future problems and spinal decay from years of neglect. We often see the result of years of neglect 20, 30 or 40 years later when adult bodies are breaking down. If a developing body has a lot of physical stress on it, and you don’t do anything to remove the effects of that stress and rebalance the body, the effects are cumulative. Degeneration and decay in the body are not normal aging processes but, in fact, the result of improper care.
Wellness chiropractic care can begin in childhood and last a lifetime. Call us at 408-979-9999 to find out more!
The Benefits Of Lifestyle Care
September 15, 2011
The benefits of Lifestyle Care are many and well documented. From improving athletic performance, increasing brain function and increasing bone density to strengthening the immune system and preventing deterioration, the results can be dramatic. And as common sense and world renowned chiropractor, Dr. Ernie Landi has stated so eloquently, “If you prevent it, you don’t have to treat it.”
Lifestyle Care is about keeping your spine and nervous system aligned, balanced and functioning to its full potential throughout your lifetime. This allows your brain and your body to communicate efficiently, without interference, so that they can function at their highest level and you can enjoy life to the fullest.
People will frequently ask, “This makes a lot of sense. How often should I come and get my spine and nervous system checked?”
The answer is quite simple and depends a lot on you. The intensity of your Lifestyle Care will depend on the intensity of your lifestyle as well as the underlying condition of your spine and nervous system. People who live stress free lives and have no underlying deterioration in their spine or nervous system require much less Lifestyle Care.
On the other hand, people with moderate amounts of stress and deterioration require more frequent visits and people who are under severe stress or have a lot of severe deterioration in their spine and nervous system require much more frequent visits to keep their body functioning at high levels of health. You and your chiropractor will determine together the frequency that is best for you based on your personal health condition and goals.
As the intensity of your lifestyle changes from month to month or from year to year you may find that the intensity of your Lifestyle Care also needs to change.
For example, if you have found that an adjustment every two weeks has been ideal for you and you change to a more stressful job with a lot of sitting or a long commute you and your chiropractor may find that one adjustment a week works better.
If you are a casual exerciser and decide to start participating in triathlons, the increased intensity of your training might require you to increase the intensity of your visits to multiple times per week. On the other hand, if your life becomes less stressful, you begin meditating three times a day and your underlying spinal conditions have already been corrected, you may find that your Lifestyle Care frequency may decrease in its intensity.
The most important thing for you to understand is that Lifestyle Care is not based on symptoms. Your frequency is not determined by how you feel but instead is determined by whether or not you have a subluxation, a spinal imbalance with nerve pressure, that needs to be adjusted. Since additional research has revealed that nerve compression can exist without pain, waiting until you have symptoms to get checked is not a good idea. Only your chiropractor can determine whether you need an adjustment or not through a chiropractic check-up.
Ask around and you will find that there are millions of people who have been under chiropractic care for decades not just because they have had a problem but because they have experienced the benefits of Lifestyle Care. These people may be some of the healthiest people you meet. Too many people in our society are suffering because they are crisis oriented when it comes to their health. Don’t let this happen to you. It is easier, less expensive and more fun to stay well than it is to have to get well after you become sick or injured. Make Lifestyle Care your top priority.

The Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis
September 15, 2011
Prescription drug abuse is out of control. Every day we hear stories in the news about kids, adults and especially celebrities who have experienced the consequences of prescription drug abuse and have either died, been injured or had to be admitted into some form of rehabilitation center. It is hard to believe that those little pills can grab such a powerful hold on your mind and body and spin your life out of control.
A recent report by the Executive Office of the President of The United States entitled Epidemic: Responding to America’s Drug Abuse Crisis revealed that prescription drug abuse is the nation’s fastest growing drug problem. Nearly one third of people age 12 and over who used drugs for the first time in 2009 began using a prescription drug non-medically.
In Canada, 54% of participants in a study reported misusing their prescription drugs at least once. 52% diverted the use of their drugs to a non-prescribed usage and 42% of the participants deliberately used their prescription with alcohol or another drug.
Drug ads on television, and in every other type of media, do not help the situation. Through beautiful scenery and highly paid actors, the commercials promise relief while disguising the side effects. Have you ever noticed how many drug ads come on during the popular time slots? One after the other we get hammered by them. Listen carefully to the side effects and do extensive homework before you ever put yourself in a position to get hooked. The highly addictive nature of some of these chemicals can own you for a lifetime once they get in you.
Seeing someone who is abusing prescription drugs or any drug for that matter is scary. The withdrawal symptoms can turn the calmest person into the image of a wild dog searching for food.
A drug filled lifestyle can be dangerous. The side effects are many and are not communicated thoroughly. As time goes on, people often add a second, third and sometimes many more drugs to their daily routine to offset the side effects of the one that they started with.
Nursing homes are filled with individuals who, over the years, increased the number of prescription drugs that they use and abuse on a daily basis. 45% of Medicare beneficiaries are on more than 5 drugs. If all these drugs were good for us and contributed to greater health and longevity you would think that the statistics would show it. But this is not the case. The World Fact Book ranks the United States 49th in life expectancy and Canada as Number 9.
If you think that you or someone you love is in the middle of a prescription drug crisis then you are probably right and you should trust your instincts. Consult with your doctor and get on a plan to change from a drug oriented lifestyle to a drug free one. You can do it.
Chiropractic offices everywhere are filled with individuals who have taken charge of their health and made this critical transition.
While the purpose of chiropractic care is not to take you off a drug it is very common that when people begin to get adjustments on a regular basis they find their need and dependency on both prescription and non prescription medication goes down dramatically or disappears altogether.
No wonder more and more individuals and families are taking the drug free approach to healthcare that chiropractic delivers. Now it’s your turn.

Have You Shared Your Story Yet?
September 8, 2011
There’s only one week left for you to win an iPad by sharing your story. Have you told your friends and family about your experience with chiropractic care? Here are some stories we’ve received from practice members that we just had to share:
“I have been going to Rozenhart Family Chiropractic for several years now and feel so much better for the incredible care that I have been given. In between all of my care I have had surgeries and have always recuperated much faster than the doctors could have imagined. This is why chiropractic is so very valuable to a healthy life style, it keeps my body in a continuous state of health and healing. The doctors always listen to what is going on and act upon making sure they can make things better. My husband went prior to his surgery and it was such a success to his healing that he was surprised that he could do things so much sooner than the doctor thought he would. Chiropractic at Rozenhart is competent, professional and wonderful to the over-all well being of our bodies. Thank you for being there, you are both amazing Chiropractors!” – Margie Krasno
“What sets Dr. Stephanie and Dr. Jennifer apart from other wellness clinics is that they genuinely care about your health and your well-being. They listen to your concerns and will do whatever it takes to help you improve your life. I highly recommend them.” – John P.
“Drs. Jennifer & Stephanie have taken me from being virtually unable to walk because of the excruciating pain in my feet, to being able to go for half hour daily walks that I anticipate increasing in length and speed going forward. Thank you for the healing combination of chiropractic and The Emotion Code.” – Susie Good
