Back To School: Tips for Playground Safety
September 2, 2010
- Drink plenty of water. Even if it’s not hot out, it’s important kids get enough water – it helps with everyday bodily functions and keeps soft tissue more pliable and less prone to injury.
- Wear a hat outside. During recess and lunch, it’s good for kids to put a hat on to protect your head from the sun, even if it’s cloudy.
- Think about how you’re moving. Tell your kids to be careful not to twist their legs, arms, neck or back in any unnatural directions as they can potentially do long-term damage.
- If you’re doing something that hurts, stop. The phrase, “no pain, no gain” isn’t always true. Pain can be a good indicator that you’re doing something harmful to your body, which is something kids need to know, too!
- If you get hurt, tell an adult. Whether it’s a scrape or a bee sting, make sure your kids know to tell an adult if they get hurt.
Could Your Mom’s Voice Help You?
June 2, 2010
Fascinating study on pre-teen girls showing that their mom’s voices and praise had dramatic effects on soothing nerves and anxiety. Another boy after hearing his mom’s voice for 3 weeks straight came out of his coma and today is a conscious participating member in his life!
Stress management is one of the keys to living a long, happy life and this seems like an easy way to reduce anxiety and relieve tension.
The study concludes by saying that it shows that all of us need someone to call that will calm us down and get us to our happy place again!
Who do you call when you need a pick-me up?
Iron Man 2- Did You Catch This?
May 11, 2010
I saw it on the weekend and was dazzled by all the Hollywood special effects and loud explosions and rocket boots! Cool stuff!
A few minutes into the movie I was touched by the thought of Robert Downey Jr.’s incredible acting gift. It struck me that he would have been the next on the list of celebrities dying from drug addiction. It is so awesome to watch someone working in their gifts and having moved past a surely trying time in his life.
Toward the end of the movie there is a party scene where DJ AM is spinning records. If you don’t know him , he was Adam Goldstein who had 11 years of sobriety from drug addiction under his belt when he survived a small plane crash. Because of that event he was prescribed prescription drugs to cope with post traumatic stress the accident caused. He was resistant according to family because he knew what could possibly happen- a relapse.
DJ AM died in August of last year from an accidental overdose of a mix of prescription medication including Oxycodone, Vicodin, Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Benadryl and Levamisole and cocaine.
It was sad to watch two amazingly talented young people with such different outcomes.
What do you think the difference was? How can we begin changing our culture’s mindset that the answers to our pain come in a pill, powder or potion?
Today Is National No Phone Zone Day!
April 30, 2010
We at Rozenhart Family Chiropractic are completely behind Oprah’s “No Phone Zone” in the car and encourage all our clients, followers and fans to make a difference, too. It’s said that texting while driving is equivalent to drunk driving – scary! Here is the pledge:
I pledge to make my car a no phone zone. Beginning right now, I will do my part to help put an end to distracted driving by pledging the safest driving behavior. I commit to (choose one):
- I will not text while I am driving
- I will not text while driving and will use only hands-free calling if I need to speak on the phone while I am driving.
- I will not text or use my phone while I am driving. If I need to use my phone, I will pull over to the side of the road.
I will ask other drivers I know to do their part to end distracted driving. I pledge to make a difference.
Call our office or visit Oprah’s site for more info and to make a pledge.
Have You Ever Eaten At A Bad Restaurant??
April 12, 2010
I saw a new practice member today who was very disappointed in her previous chiropractor and decided to go somewhere else. What I loved about this story is that she didn’t go away thinking “I am NEVER doing that again!” – she just sought out a different practitioner! I have heard every horror story about our profession, and there are “bad apples” in every profession. Lawyers have it about as rough as we do in terms of what people say when we’re not around…(smile). Of course millions of people say GREAT things about chiropractic care too!! My suggestion is that even if you had a negative experience with one doctor, that may not be reason to extend your opinion to the entire profession….just a thought.
If you have eaten at a bad restaurant, you likely never returned to that same place right? Did you ever go out to eat again? Of course you did, just to a different restaurant!
Thoughts? We love your comments!
Back to the Basics: What is Chiropractic Care?
April 9, 2010
It’s hard to find someone that doesn’t know what a chiropractor does, but as we all come from different backgrounds and experiences, I thought it would be fun to take a step back and define chiropractic care.
If you pulled out a dictionary and looked up the word “chiropractic,” you’d find something along the lines of:
A therapeutic system based primarily upon the interactions of the spine and nervous system, the method of treatment usually being to adjust the segments of the spinal column.
When it comes down to it, that is what chiropractic care focuses on – interactions and adjustments of the spine and nervous system. It doesn’t end there, though. In our experience, chiropractic adjustments are only a piece of relieving pain and increasing quality of life. What you eat and how you use your body play an important role, too.
The whole body approach we take to chiropractic care incorporates regular adjustments, solid nutrition and consistent exercise. We’ve found that many patients come in for a specific problem (such as back pain, neck pain or headaches) and stay for additional care after experiencing the positive side effects: better energy, elimination, digestion and sleep, in addition to more energy overall.
Chiropractic care is an important element for everyone to maintain a healthy quality of life. We’ve seen it help adults, children – even infants – first-hand, and benefits are becoming more and more commonplace. Here are just a few articles that stress the importance of chiropractic care:

Acute? Chronic? or Permanent? What’s The Difference?
April 2, 2010
It might be an oversimplification, but most health challenges can be classified into either acute, chronic or permanent. What you need to know is that all of these are progressive. When the body begins moving in an unhealthy direction for a long enough period of time, symptoms begin to appear. Now just because the symptoms just appeared it does not mean that the problem is new, it just means that the signs just appeared!
An acute health problem is usually associated with an acute injury resulting from something obvious like a physical injury, chemical assault or heavy emotional trauma.
A chronic problem includes symptoms that come and go, x-rays that demonstrate localized areas of decay in the spine, muscle problems that aren’t rubbed away, or simply health concerns that that most people use over the counter medications to deal with.
Problems become permanent when we are only managing symptoms and never look to the root cause of the health challenge. People with permanent problems will often use medication for the rest of their lives for comfort. Unfortunately, this only brings comfort, not health. This practice also usually causes health problems that are easy to correct, to progress, from acute to chronic to permanent.
This is why we are adamant about checking your spine and nervous system regularly, ….not just when symptoms develop. It is also why we check kids in our practice- to make sure your children grow up healthy, rather than wait for them to break down as adults.
Do you have a health challenge? Is it acute? Chronic? Permanent?

The Global Effects Of Subluxation Part 3
November 30, 2009
If you missed parts 1 and 2 read them first….
Here is the one of the biggest reasons why you and your family need to include chiropractic care as a part of your healthy, 100 year lifestyle!
5. An Early Unnecessary Demise: In 1994 Dr. Lee authored a lengthy article that postulates that the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) is involved in all disease processes and explains that causes and cures of all diseases are mediated by our central nervous system. Everyone must be checked on a routine basis for neurological interference caused by subluxations at a lifestyle chiropractic office if they desire to stay healthy. Another study reveals that subluxations negatively effect the visceral (organ) input centers and output centers in your brain stem. This indicates that almost any subluxation at any level may result in almost any kind of health challenge. Finally, the autopsies performed by Dr. Windsor M.D. correlated that nearly 100% of diseases these animals suffered from were related to a curvature in the spine or a spinal problem that damaged the nerve that supplied that specific organ.
Is this different from what you thought chiropractic care was all about??
How can we help you achieve the life you deserve??
Sickness Season or Healthy Season??
November 27, 2009
Each autumn millions of children and adults come down with a cold, the flu or an ear infection. Yet misconceptions often result in inappropriate treatment.
Colds and Flu: Both the common cold and influenza are caused by viruses, so medical treatment is rarely necessary. Influenza is like a cold, but may include fever, body aches, chills and extreme fatigue. Stomach flu which causes vomiting is often a case of mild food poisoning.
According to an article in the February 2003 issue of Pediatrics, colds accounted for 1.6 million emergency room visits and 25 million ambulatory visits in 1998. In response to the widespread misconception that medical intervention is helpful, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued some common sense advice to parents:
- Avoid antibiotics which have no effect on viruses.
- Don’t use over-the-counter cold or cough medications since most will not work.
- Don’t use aspirin if a child has a fever since it can cause a serious reaction called Reye’s syndrome.
Annual flu vaccines are available, but their benefit is extremely questionable. Vaccine experts must decide which flu varieties will be the biggest threats 9-12 months in advance. Since flu viruses mutate constantly, it is nearly impossible to include the right strains in the vaccine.
The Swine Flu is causing recent concern. According to the September 8, 2009 Wall Street Journal, the CDC now advocates “watchful waiting” as an option. “The majority of adolescents and adults and most children won’t need antivirals,” said the CDC’s director of the National Center for Immunization & Respiratory Diseases, Anne Schuchat. Most people just need “mom’s chicken soup, rest and lots of fluids.”
Ear Infections: Typically affecting young children, ear infections may be caused by viruses or bacteria. The Southern California/RAND Evidence-based Practice Center analyzed clinical studies conducted from 1964 through 1998, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. It estimates that over 5 million cases of acute otitis media (AOM) occur each year in the US at a cost of approximately $3 billion.
The studies showed that without antibiotics, nearly two-thirds of children recover from pain and fever within 24 hours of diagnosis and over 80% recover fully within seven days. In the May 2004 issue of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued new guidelines, recommending observation in many cases instead of antibiotics. Several studies have shown that chiropractic care benefits children with recurrent ear infections, such as the one conducted by Drs. Fallon and Edelman and described in the March 1998 edition of Alternative Therapies.
Remedies and Prevention: So what should you do when you come down with a cold, the flu or an ear infection? Get plenty of sleep, drink lots of fluids, and eat healthy food. In addition be sure to get adjusted regularly and especially if you are sick. Your nervous system directly controls your immune system, and spinal subluxations can interfere with the communication between the nervous system and the immune system. Chiropractic care will remove this interference so your body can maximize its immune system response and keep you as healthy as possible.
Thomas Edison said, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Good advice for us to follow.
