FDA Science and Mission At Risk, Part 1

April 14, 2010

Before you take another pill for stress relief or anything else, you must read the 60 page report published by the FDA entitled FDA Science and Mission at Risk. In this report the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, declares itself unable to fulfill its mission.  Here is a summary of the first 6 of a 12 point self audit that, in their own words says, “The nation is at risk…”. The following are exact quotes from the report:

  1. “The FDA cannot fulfill its mission because its scientific base has eroded and its scientific organizational structure is weak”
  2. “The FD cannot fulfill its mission because its scientific workforce does not have sufficient capacity and capability”
  3. “The FDA cannot fulfill its mission because its information technology (IT) infrastructure is inadequate”
  4. “The FDA does not have the capability to ensure the safety of food for the nation”
  5. “The development of medical products based on ‘new science’ cannot be adequately regulated by the FDA”
  6. “There is insufficient capacity in modeling, risk assessment, and analysis.”

Nervous yet?   Think you are protected if it’s “FDA approved”? Stay tuned for the next 6 conclusions later this week!

Pretty scary. Thanks for sharing this. I guess I am not too surprised that their IT Dept is inadequate and that they cannot guarantee the safety of the food for our nation. All of the controversy about all of the food that comes in from China and other products from China that are TOXIC in the news – every story like this helps us each to be better educated about it all and we all have to be our own advocates.

Scary…very very scary. And if FDA cannot do exactly what is its purpose, then what is it doing then? And what do we do in the meantime. I guess, it is more than necessary now to know where your products are coming from, and btw grow your vegies in your backyard, or get it from a local organic farm that you can go and SEE. I will do that. I already grow my herbs. And eat less and less of processed foods.
But this wouldn’t be enough, I know. So what do we do. I guess we need to know it from FDA what exactly is going on, and how are they going to remedy the situation, and what is our govt doing about it!

I agree Shailja! We are ultimately responsible for our own health and this is just another example of that. No one is going to be able to protect us, we need to grow as much as we can, know where food is coming from and seriously limit our use of medications. Thanks for your input!

Pretty incredible isn’t it Chrystal! We are our own best advocates, get informed about where things come from!

This is no surprise to me – I haven’t counted on the FDa since my 30s when I realized how things get to market through them. And if you look at all the side effects of drugs (for example in a magazine the entire back page is potential side effects from a drug) then it’s obvious there is something else going on for the FDA that isn’t about regulating for our health.

It is amazing, Pamelah, how many times I hear “but it is FDA approved” or the ads on TV saying the same thing. Most of society doesn’t know that it really doesn’t matter! Aren’t the lists of side effects getting longer and longer? I saw a drug ad in a magazine on one page and the side effects were the next 3 pages!! How crazy is that, time to find a new model for true “health care” like valuing prevention more than symptom/disease management.

Got something to say?
