How to Choose a Chiropractor

April 28, 2010

As with everything, not all Doctors are alike. When looking for a Chiropractor, what do you ask? Here are a few of our suggestions for finding a Chiropractor that is a good fit for you:

  • Ask friends and family members if they’re happy with their Chiropractor. Ask what they like about him/her?
  • Look for offices close to you on the Internet and give them a call. Chiropractors know how important it is to show how caring and competent they are, so a well-trained, friendly person answering their phone is a good indicator of a solid office.
  • Check out the Chiropractor’s website to get a feel for the office before your appointment. Does it give you insight about what to expect?

After making an appointment with a Chiropractor, here are a few questions to ask yourself during the session:

  • Do they use any technology to assess you?
  • Do they use X-rays to get a look inside?
  • Does the Doctor perform an evaluation before any care is rendered?
  • Does the Chiropractor tell you what’s wrong, how they can help and what a care plan is before care is rendered?
  • When you meet with the Doctor, are you listened to?  Do you feel cared about?

Many people are concerned about finances when they call offices and call around to price compare or to see who will be covered by their insurance.  A word of caution: the old saying, “you get what you pay for” is also true in health care.  We’ve found that doctors who don’t participate in insurance plans are able to give you the care you truly need without being severely limited by insurance regulators.

To find out if we can help you and how we can be your chiropractor please call 408-979-9999 and ask a few questions!

Thanks for the great guidelines! I had never thought about health insurance limiting care before. But, now that you mention it I can see how care would be limited to benefits. It seems so backwards!

Isn’t is amazing? If we were preferred providers with insurance companies, they would get to dictate how we see people, how often , what we can and can’t do. We do still bill insurance as a service for our practice members but I can not be told what is “best” for my practice member by a 3rd party who has not seen , evaluated or has the expertise we have. They are a strict for profit business not with YOUR best interest in mind.

This is a great list of very practical tips and I love that you point out the freedom that comes from not using insurance. Thanks for the useful information.

Great guidelines, Dr. Jennifer! Finding a good chiropractor who is compatible can be a challenge (as I know from having moved around a bit, having to find a new one in each locale), but having someone who listens and gives you a plan of action is vital. After all, the idea is that you as the patient will partner with the health provider and make decisions for your own well-being. That’s why taking back health care from insurance companies is so important IMO. Who really should be in charge of health care decisions? The patient and the doctor. (Sorry, my pet peeve about dealing with insurance companies is showing)

Thanks Sandy, sometimes it does take some time to find the right fit. Glad you found your match!

Linda, your pet peeve is many people’s pet peeve, including mine! Thanks for the comment, I agree with the care being in the hands of the practice member and the doctor. We like to give a plan of action so our practice members know where they are headed and how chiropractic care is going to help get them there!

    Hi Dr. Jennifer,

Knowing you as I do I can say you meet all this criteria and more!! I think your guidelines are a great start. I would love it if you would talk more about chiropractic tools and specialties if D.C. do indeed specialize.
    Thanks,
    Julie

What a great list of useful tips. My aunt just mentioned yesterday about the need to find a chiropractor. I’m going to print this out and send it to her. Thanks for sharing.
