Long Hours Are Bad News For Your Heart
May 24, 2010
Our days are getting longer and longer and the research is showing that those long days at the office are causing stress to our systems beyond what it can adapt to.
A study of British civil servants showed that those working 11 hour days showed a 60% increase in the likelihood of having an adverse cardiac event than those who clocked out after 7 hours.
Although this study was done on people working in an office environment, I believe that you can extend these finding to those also working at home! A healthy, happy life is about finding balance. On your deathbed, you won’t be saying “I wish I had worked more” – no one does- find those activities you enjoy that PULL you away from your work!
How do YOU find balance in your life??

Got something to say?

Wow, that is a pretty impressive statistic. Another reason to be reasonable about one’s working hours.

Yikes! That’s enough to make you come home in time for dinner! Thanks for the reminder about the importance of balance!
Wow! This is a very sobering fact. I’m going to share this with everyone I can think of!
This is right up my alley, Dr. J. Thanks for the reminder to everyone. I think that if we each take responsibility for our choices and commit to living a more balanced life…what a great world!

This is such a great reminder! I try to pull myself away from work to spend time relaxing with my husband and son, but as a small business owner it is so tempting to keep going into all hours of the night.
Wow. Balance is vital for your mind and your body. What a great reminder to take a break and have some fun.
What a great blog post & question! One of the best ways I find balance is by making my Daily Practice a priority. My Daily Practice is a routine of walking my dog, exercising, journaling, reading, and meditation. I do my Daily Practice before I work because it centers me in a place of trust, confidence & relaxation. Aaaahhh…

Working from home it is definitely easier for me to spend more time working than taking care of myself. Everything blends together and there is no separation of work and home. Thanks for the reminder. I will have to schedule in “down time”.

I totally believe this! That’s why I’m commenting on your post from the beach!!!
Thanks for the stats!

Please keep preaching the accountability to balance. I try to do my part to teach the inner balance that comes from being conscious of values and purpose. Now, they have to let that interpret into better physical care as well. And they have people like you to support them!

Thank you for the reminder to pay attention to our hours. Even though I enjoy what I do i can spend long hours and notice it.
Even if we love what we do, (which I do too btw!!) we need to have good balance for great health! Thanks for commenting Beth!
Thanks Jeff, it is so easy to get out of balance unless we are conscious of the choices we are making- those that are supportive of our values and purpose vs. those that are not. I will continue the mission!!
OOOH Terri, I hope you are enjoying the beach! Good for you!!
It is so tempting Erika, I know. I have to CLOSE my laptop and walk away, and hide my crackberry from myself!
Wow…I always knew all work and no play makes Julie cranky, but seeing this once again reminds me to play. I think a day at the beach this Memorial Day weekend is the plan.
Thanks Dr. J for the reminder.
